WHAT ARE THE GUNFIGHT GAMES?

THE Concept

The concept behind THE GUNFIGHT GAMES is to provide a series of competitionspecific, training camps, in order to prepare competitors for the THE GUNFIGHT GAMES, competition event.
Training camps will take place once a month, for three months, with the competition event being held on the fourth month.
In order to attend the competition event, competitors will sign up to participate in all three, monthly training camps, which will prepare them for the competition event on the fourth month.

THE Concept

THE AIM

THE AIM

The aim of THE GUNFIGHT GAMES is to foster the application of operationally tested, street-scene, tactical tradecraft and mechanics, under more competitive conditions, in order to bridge the gap between competition shooting and robust, experience-based, tactics, thereby promoting knowledge and education transfer to both the competition and tactical shooting communities, respectively.
By doing this, we aim to promote the spirit of competition, and combine it with the challenges of a dynamic, thought-provoking and tactically demanding, streetscene range environment, where the principles of normal competition shooting, do not apply.

SO, WHAT MAKES THE GUNFIGHT GAMES DIFFERENT TO OTHER GAMES?

We do not incorporate weights, ropes, climbing frames, monkey bars, sandbags or weighted sleds into any of the competition events.

The training camps and competetition events are an integration of our STREET SCENE SYSTEM of TRAINING, under safe, enjoyable, challenging and competitive conditions.

All training camps and the competition events, take place within the confines of a Street range setup.

By adding a competing category for young shooters (14-17 years of age) we aim to foster their commitment to their own personal development and growth, as responsible firearms users, in order to advance their self-confidence and instill a competitive spirit, in a safe and controlled environment, whilst providing a healthy, unifying purpose, for young shooters and their families.

THE TRAINING CAMPS

The Training Camps will consist of three, one-day, training days. Training camps will be progressively structured in order that competitors are taught the necessary tactical skills that they will be assessed and marked on, during the competition event, on the fourth month.

Training camps will be delivered through an integrated and blended training curriculum, using models, white board exercises, and demonstrations, before progressing onto dry and live firing exercises.

TRAINING CAMP 1

The first training camp is the foundation of the necessary tactical knowledge-transfer, which competitors will be expected to build upon, before entering The Street.

Emphasis is placed on safety procedures, specifically involving dual weapon systems and the proper tactical use of cover, by utilizing simunitions, in order to drive home the importance of the adherence to the two principles of:

• Cover from View
• Cover from Fire

Which makes returning effective and accurate fire, all that more challenging

TRAINING CAMP 2

Training Camp 2, will see competitors enter The Street for the first time.

Additional tactical knowledge will be added, with emphasis placed on vehicle abandonment, weapon manipulations, shoulder transitions, weapon transitions, target-focused shooting techniques, and managing weapon malfunctions on the move.

This will be where competitors find that crucial balance between speed and accuracy, whilst applying the appropriate tactics.

TRAINING CAMP 3

Training Camp 3 will consist of revision of all previous instruction, as well as additional instruction on 2-man team tactical movement, in The Street, with an emphasis on communication between team members.

The Anchor Drill, which is a zero meters engagement of three targets, is also included during this training camp.

This camp will also provide competitors with the opportunity to conduct a practice run of their respective shooting competition events, in order to get a more accurate measure of times, scores etc. before the Games, the following month.

THE COMPETITION EVENT

The competition event will take place on the fourth month and will be the culmination of all three training camps.

Competitors will participate in a series of shoots, based on the content of their previously attended training camps.

All competition shoots will take place inside The Street range set-up.
Competitors will compete in categories based on age and sex.

There will be a separate category for amputee shooters.

There will also be a category for young shooters, between the ages of 14 and 17 years of age. However, young shooters will be restricted to competing in The Snake Run Event only.

During shooting events, competitors will be scored, in accordance with, specified and clearly defined rules.

Depending on the numbers of shooters in each category, prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed competitors.

Event 1

The Anchor

The Anchor is an individual and pistol-only shoot, involving the engagement of multiple threats from a zero yard distance and is based on the Go Noisy, Anchor Drill. Event 3

THE CAR BAIL

The Car Bail is an individual and dual weapon-system shoot. Competitors will start from the drivers seat of a vehicle. Pistols will be on their person. Rifles will be inside a holdall on the rear passenger seat. Competitors will engage a single threat to the drivers side of the vehicle. Once engaged,

Actions must be open, or a chamber flag inserted, and detachable magazines removed. The use of high-visibility chamber flags is recommended as a courtesy to other event competitors.
  • A competitor who causes an unsafe discharge will be stopped by the RSO and shall receive a GAMES Disqualification (GQ). Examples of unsafe discharge include: o An accidental or negligent discharge that travels over a backstop, a berm, or in any other direction deemed by the RSO to be unsafe. Note that a competitor who legitimately fires a shot at a target, which then travels in an unsafe direction, will not be disqualified. o A shot which strikes the ground within 10 feet of the competitor, except when shooting at a target closer than 10 feet to the competitor. ▪ Exception – a shot that strikes the ground within 10 feet of the competitor due to a “squib”. o A shot that occurs while loading, reloading, or unloading any firearm. ▪ Exception 1 – a detonation which occurs while unloading a firearm is not considered an accidental discharge. A “detonation” is defined as the ignition of the primer of a round, other than by action of a firing pin, where the projectile or shot does not pass through the barrel (e.g., when a slide is being manually retracted, when a round is dropped etc.). ▪ Exception 2 – A “slam fire” detonation caused by the firing pin traveling forward when the gun is on safe during “make ready” that does not travel over the berm or impacts in a safe place. If the gun can be repaired and demonstrated to be safe to match staff the competitor may continue with it. o A shot which occurs during remedial action in the case of a malfunction. o A shot which occurs while transferring a firearm between hands. o A shot which occurs during movement, except while engaging targets.
  • A competitor who performs an act of unsafe gun handling will be stopped by the RSO as soon as possible. Examples of unsafe gun handling include: o Dropping a loaded firearm at any time after the “Make Ready” command and before the “Range Is Clear” command. Dropping a cleared firearm will not result in a Games DQ. A firearm is considered clear when the correct clearing procedure has been completed.
  • Shooting of any range furniture, structure, or vehicle, will result in a 5-point deduction, per shot fired. This does not apply to wooden target frames.
  • Firearms must be under the control of the competitor at all times, irrespective of whether they are about to compete, during a competition or after a competition is complete. Competitors will unload and clear their weapon systems BEFORE they depart the rang
  • The intentional leaving/grounding or abandoning of a firearm, WHILST IN THE CONFINES OF THE STREET RANGE, whether cleared or not, may result in disqualification on safety grounds. This includes if the competitor has a minor injury or feels discomfort from hot brass etc. Firearms may only be abandoned in one of the following conditions: o Loaded, safety catch fully engaged, muzzle pointed in a designated safe direction. o Completely unloaded (no ammunition in the firearm), detachable magazine removed, muzzle pointed in a designated safe direction.
  • Unloading any firearm in an unsafe manner or discharging a firearm while not legitimately engaging a target will result in disqualification.
  • Unloading any firearm in an unsafe manner or discharging a firearm while not legitimately engaging a target will result in disqualification.
  • Engaging a steel target in an unsafe manner, will result in disqualification. For clarity, an “unsafe manner” is described as: o Engaging steel targets with handgun ammunition at a range of less than 15 yards. o Engaging steel targets with rifle ammunition at a range of less than 60 yards. o Engaging designated, pistol only, steel targets with a rifle.
  • Allowing the muzzle of a firearm to point at any part of the competitor’s body during a course of fire (i.e., sweeping) will result in a disqualification. o Exception 1 – During pairs, competition events, where the appropriate “Crossing” drill is adhered to and applied correctly. o Exception 2 – Sweeping of the lower extremities (below the belt) while drawing or manipulating a firearm (low-muzzle short-stocking), provided that the competitor’s fingers are clearly outside of the trigger guard.

  • Multiple, minor infractions will result in an event disqualification
  • Unless otherwise stipulated in the range briefing, firearms will begin the event in the following ready conditions: o Handgun: Holstered and loaded to event specifications and holstered. In the case of single-action autos or double-action autos with manual override safeties, the safety catch must be in the “safe” position. o Rifle: Slung and loaded to event specifications and held in the low or high ready position. Safety catch must be in the “safe” position. ▪ Exception – During specific shoots, the rifle will be placed inside a holdall, on the rear passenger seat of the vehicle. The rifle will be loaded (not made ready) and with sling attached.
  • At no point may a competitor shoot a firearm while holding a second firearm in the other hand, violation will result in a 5-point deduction, per shot fired. o Exception – If using a single-point sling, the competitor may, when transitioning from rifle to pistol, maintain control of the rifle, with one hand, whilst drawing and firing the pistol with the other hand. Once the transition drill is complete, the pistol must be safely holstered before any weapon malfunction drill is performed on the rifle.
  • Hot re-holstering of the pistol will be required during certain stages. It must be returned to the holster in a safe condition as follows: o If the competitor has conducted a transition drill and is re-holstering, prior to any weapon malfunction drill being performed on their rifle. o If the pistol has a safety, it should be in the “safe” position. o Single-action autos or double-action autos with manual override safeties, the safety catch must be in the “safe” position. o In the case of double-action autos, without safeties, the hammer must be down/forward.

  • Plate Carriers are NOT required for the following competition shooting events: o The Anchor o The Snake Run
  • Women’s Plate Carriers must weigh 12lbs, and Men’s Plate Carriers must weigh 15lbs. Weight of the carrier is measured without magazine pouches, attachments, hydration bladders, etc.
  • Carriage and stowage of magazines: o The carriage and stowage of magazines is shooters preference. o When competing in a competition shooting event, where the wearing of a plate carrier is required, competitors can stow magazines on their plate carrier, their belt kit, or a combination of both. o When competing in a competition shooting event, where plate carriers are NOT required, competitors must stow magazines on their belt kit. o Extended pistol magazines are permitted. However, competitors must adhere to the ammunition to magazine ratio, relating to their specific shooting event. For clarity, if the ammunition to magazine ratio is 1 x magazine of 8 x rounds, 1 x magazine of 12 x rounds and 1 x magazine of 10 x rounds, then competitors must adhere to those directions and CANNOT load a single, extended magazine with 30 x rounds. Extended rifle magazines are subject to the same rule.
  • Belt Kits and Gun Belts: o Belt kit/gun belt configuration is shooters preference. o Belt kits/gun belts must have the capacity to stow three (3) pistol magazines and four (4) rifle magazines. o If the competition shooting event requires the wearing of a plate carrier, then the stowage of magazines will be shooters preference. o Competitors must carry two (2) CAT tourniquets, which must be easily accessible and can be stowed on belt kits/gun belts and/or plate carriers, if the competition shooting event requires the wearing of one.
  • Slings: o For all competition shooting events that involve the use of a rifle, a sling must be attached to the rifle at all times. o Before the rifle is fired, the rifle with attached sling, must be securely slung on the competitor’s body. o The use of single and/or double-point slings, will be shooters preference.
  • Shooting gloves: o The use of shooting gloves is prohibited, unless for medical reasons.
  • Pistol Ammunition: o Pistol ammunition shall be 9mm Parabellum (9x19mm NATO) or larger.
  • Rifle Ammunition: o Rifle ammunition shall be .223 Remington (5.56x45mm NATO) and/or 300 Blackout. o AK ammunition is prohibited o Ammunition containing tracer, incendiary, armor piercing, steel jacketed or steel/tungsten/penetrator core projectiles is prohibited. o Competitors will be financially responsible for replacing targets damaged by prohibited ammunition.
  • Dress: o Dress will be shooters preference. o The wearing of shorts, for both men and women, during the training camps and the Competition Events, is prohibited.
6 Firearms:
  • All firearms used by competitors must be serviceable and safe. GFG Officials may inspect a competitor’s firearms at any time to check they are functioning safely. If any firearm is declared unserviceable or unsafe by a GFG Official, it must be withdrawn from the event until it is repaired to the satisfaction of the RSO
  • Firearms must be of a factory configuration. Prototype firearms are prohibited. Internal and external modifications are allowed, provided the modifications do not alter the original function and operation of the firearm.
  • Firearms capable of fully automatic- or burst-fire (“machine guns”) may be used only in semi-auto mode (i.e., not more than one (1) round fired with each pull of the trigger). Violation of this rule will incur a 5-point deduction, per shot fired.
  • No factory safeties may be disabled on rifle/pistol. This includes the firing pin block, grip safety, and trigger safety.
  • Catastrophic Malfunctions: o If a competitor’s firearm becomes unserviceable, that competitor may repair their firearm with directly equivalent replacement parts and will be permitted a second attempt at the competition shooting event. o If no equivalent replacement parts are available, the competitor may use a spare firearm, as long as it meets the same requirements, and will be permitted a second attempt at the competition shooting event.
  • Sighting Systems and Optics: o Red dot and iron sights are the only optics permitted to be used during all competition shooting events. o Magnifiers are prohibited.
  • Holsters: o Pistol holsters must be a practical/tactical carry style and must safely retain the handgun during vigorous movement and must completely cover the trigger. Holsters must be secured to the maximum level of retention offered at the start of each stage. The belt upon which the handgun holster is attached must be worn at waist level. o There is a requirement for a concealed carry holster to be used during THE ANCHOR competition event. o Shoulder holsters and cross-draw holsters are prohibited. o Belly bags or “fanny packs” are prohibited.
7. Scoring and Penalties:
  • Missed shots will be assessed as a 1-point deduction.
  • Paper targets will be used in various stages throughout the events. Competitors will be given a written stage brief and verbal walk through explaining the targets, their hit and miss areas. If a round strike breaks the line even the slightest bit, the round will be counted as the highest point score.
  • Steel Targets may be utilized. Steel targets will be counted as hit or miss. Penalty for misses is a 1-point deduction.
  • Failure to engage steel or paper targets will result in Failure To Engage (FTE) penalties.
  • If a competitor wishes to arbitrate their score (time, number of hits/misses, or tactical application ) they must notify the scorekeeper and request to arbitrate. The following process will be followed: o The RSO, GD and competitor will review the recorded video (of the competitors run) in order to establish the reason for the arbitration. o If, after reviewing the recorded video, the reason for the arbitration is valid, then the competitors score will be amended to reflect the oversight. o If, after reviewing the recorded video, the reason for the arbitration is NOT valid, then the competitor will be expected to adhere to the original score.
  • After completion of the competition event, there will be a final arbitration period. This process is as follows: o Final tallying of the scores will be posted. o After the completion of the last event there will be an arbitration period where competitors will review their scores and any other scores that look incorrect, check for errors, and bring them to the attention of the GD. o After this period of time is complete, there will be a last call. o If there are no more requests, scores are FINAL. o After this time no further review of scores, videos, targets, etc. will be had and the scores will remain FINAL regardless of findings later on. o The only exception to this rule is a finding of cheating, at which point changes will be made.
8. Coaching:
  • The RSO can correct a shooter if they are engaging an incorrect target. RSO’s must correct a shooter if they are about to commit a safety violation. Neither scorers or the RSO will provide any other shooting coaching/instruction to the competitor.
